i'll prefix the post with an apology for the double-post; i'll be sure to not let it happen again. last sunday marked the 10th annual chennai photo contest celebrated at the taj (no, not that taj). anyway, at van's behest i finally entered a few photos on the eve of the deadline. my expectations weren't overly optimistic, i sometimes believe that i have talent, but i've never really measured myself in a real-world competition. further the fact that i didn't properly fill out the application form probably wasn't helping matters either. but a few weeks later and we receive an invitation to the awards ceremony... free brunch? i'm sold.
so we arrive at the hotel with zen in-tow; and i approach the registration table to pick up my name tag. things seem to be going normally, but when i told them who i was it seemed the entire staff swarmed around us and whisked us away into the atrium. apparently, there was a special section for participants; however, there wasn't room for van (or zen). regardless, i followed as instructed with zen firmly on my hip (and van close behind), we trudged along to the front of the room. i suppose once we got to my designated seat that they realized we were determined to sit with each other; and just as quickly the name tag formerly reserving a ms. rosaline's seat was whisked away. (we're sorry :)
the event was an impressive display with over 300 entries; and quite a few exceptional shots. there was evenan entire row dedicated for the local media! well, i was starting to suspect that perhaps i might have won something; and that suspicion was quickly confirmed when i was announced as the winner of the first category: faces. the actual managing director of the hotel commented that the photo moved him; i was humbled to say the least. then, as the show came to its denouement; the grand finale of awards was to be announced: best overall photo. van was being a bit daft and demanding i hand over her camera, just in case... well, lo and behold, they did call my name again. i was a bit surprised; but it definitely felt nice being appreciated. so now i have two plaques hanging on the wall for my effort. i must say i'm a bit tickled pink, but will try to keep my wits about me. :)
